The Worth Of Knowing

Knowing in part | Being fully known

No Lack

I wrap my hand around a mug – the one with the flowers and leaves. My other hand holds a Bible – the one with the worn leather cover.

I say a prayer that my heart would be soft and receptive of the Word as the water heats on the stove.

I open the tea bag hoping it will soothe my sore throat.

Steam rises as I fill my mug. I open my Bible and find where I left off while the tea steeps.

"Truly, truly ... he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep ... the sheep follow him, for they know his voice ..." (John 10)

I read the familiar words and become restless. I check my tea only to see that the water is barely colored. I stir it, letting the water agitate the leaves in the bag. Color begins to diffuse throughout the mug. Still dissatisfied with the result I read the back of the box of tea. “Cover and steep for 10-15 minutes.” I groan and place a small plate over the mug and wait.

Quiet, hidden work can be infuriating. I can’t see it. I can’t control it. I can only trust that if I let it steep it will do it’s work.

I look back at the familiar words on the page in front of me. Tears collect behind my eyes. The common lessen is not lost on me.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

All to often I’m looking for the lessen to apply to my day. The application to make me more Christ-like. The principle that will make me a better disciple.

And Jesus says abide.

Sit at my feet.

Be still and know that I am God.

The quiet, hidden work of relationship building with Jesus is also the thing that truly changes lives.

There is no lack in God’s Word.

It is as relevant today as the day it was written.

Times have changed, but Jesus and His desire for His people hasn’t.

Time in building relationship with God in His Word is not at the expense of application. God Himself applies truths and principles from His Word not simply to change our actions, but transform our hearts. God doesn’t just want better disciples but captivated lovers.

“Therefore, my beloved … work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Quiet moments pass.

Eventually I lift the small plate off my mug and drink deeply.

The Lord is my Shepherd. May I know His voice. He leads me to rich pastures. May His Words be to me the bread of life. I have all that I need.
