I’ve been struggling to write it all week …
that God made humans in His image.
that we are God’s beloved.
that every life taken will be reckoned for.
that in fighting evil from a place of vengeance and hate we make ourselves vulnerable to being consumed by evil.
that even just vengeance is too dangerous a work for humans.
that people who are beloved have no need to avenge themselves.
that God will carry out the required reckoning with justice, wrath, and goodness.
that leaving vengeance to God restrains us from treating humans as anything less than a holy God’s image bearers.

that repaying evil with love, kindness, and prayer actually shields our hearts from being eroded by evil.
that it’s not actually me versus you.
that God’s mercy and wrath are both stronger and better than we can know.
“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ To the contrary, ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
